Pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and device companies are required to do extensive testing on their new products, and clinical research professionals carry out this task. Clinical research and device trials are scientific studies of the effects, risks and benefits of medicinal and device products, including new and currently marketed drugs/devices.

Beside the physicians who investigate the effects of drug therapies and devices on patient populations, trials require Clinical Research Associates (CRA) and Clinical Research Coordinators (CRC) also known as clinical monitors and research nurses, to ensure testing is conducted according to strict FDA/ICH-GCP guidelines in the U.S.
